How to Start a Successful Ecommerce Business

Most of the online startup lose their engine power very quickly and just end their journey abruptly.

The founder of ecommerce business, mostly focus on which products to sell and how best we can showcase it.

The biggest myth of ecommerce industry is that having the best product, business models, a business idea, awesome UI, marketing strategy for sale are the key points, which can make an ecommerce startups a successful ecommerce business. However, one should bear that in mind that these are supporting factors for the ecommerce business. And they help in growing your business, but the success rate is driven by other factors such as choosing the right set of audience, a weak foundation is a sure shot way to hit failure.

Gather your audience

Do you guys remember the two product launch – Tata Nano and Xiaomi Phone? For Tata Nano, there already had a huge waiting list, well blame it to its free publicity or the cheaper price that everyone wanted one. Unfortunately that didn’t worked out well, but launch was a huge success. And the second case Xiaomi Phone, registration on Flipkart, so that you can participate in the sale. Again the manufacturers knew how many people would buy it before hand. They did it by choosing the right audience or building the audience before launching a product.

Apply the same principle, of securing your crowd before the launch date. How to make it possible?

“Coming soon” or “Be among the first 250 subscribers to get abc” are the taglines which do a trick, but that’s not the real magic. The real magic is done behind the scenes, much before the announcement of a launch date.

You have a brand; build a story of it which could be of interest to people share your story with your friends, their friends, your investors, other entrepreneurs and build a relation, a connection. So now you have the list A, with A you can influence other “n” people and with A+n , again you can influence “nn” people. So here you know the depth of water i.e. how much audience you could see on your launch date.

Need of Reverse Engineering

Let me give you an analogy, you re writer and just completed a book, luckily a publisher agreed to publish it as well. But how would you compel readers to buy it?

  • You write about your book on smaller blogs
  • You advertize may be using Google adwords
  • You create a FB page

· Ask your friends and their friends and friends of friends of friends to read it

· A foreword from a famous person /celebrity to add stars to your book

This all applies to an ecommerce website as well. Isn’t? But still one thing is missing. The topic of the book and the audience to an ecommerce website. You won’t write about a topic relating to Africa and get it launched in Bangladesh isn’t? So you know your audience and that’s one of the reason you wrote that book. Similarly you should know your audience beforehand, hence starting a small business online early on what kind of reaction you would get on launch date.

1. Start early

2. Build a story

3. Use referral email campaign and get users who are interested in your idea

4. Share the story

5. If they like it, ask them to refer it your friend

6. Grow your network

So finally your live date is approaching and you know, how the crowd would react, and you can generate profits from day one.

Lock and keep your mailing list safe

So you started working on pre launch, you are growing your network, you are meeting people but are you sure every name you get is sealed in the mailing list?

The idea presented here is that once you have your first set of people, and you would be using it to lead traffic compoundable, what measures are you taking to secure the list? Basically if we work on the area which could lead to more traffic with minimum effort or should we concentrate on moderate traffic with more effort. This kind of analysis is what you guys need to prepare and stick to your dashboard for easy reference and to make sure you can hit the target.

A list mentioning the traffic source, conversion rates, and traffic rates is pretty handy and gives you a real picture of what’s going on. Are the things as per schedule or we are missing a lot. Also it will give you a fair idea on how much audience had been accumulated till now and is it worth spending money and time in this venture.

Couple of suggestions which might be of interest to you –

  • An email template before the pre launch
  • Adding a personal touch to the template
  • Put in your mailing list which can help you
  • And more importantly Be uncomplaining

I know that’s the hardest part, but for results you just need to wait!

What next once the list is ready?

So now you have the list, be in constant touch with the group members. IT should not appear as if you are bugging them, but a casual yet professional touch is what is needed. You can

· Share your story, but before that make it interesting, it should have the grip and people should be entertained.

· Ask for suggestions, feedbacks, improvements or even ideas from them could be borrowed

· The early subscribers make them feel special, elite class. Have some things exclusively just for you label.

· People need VIP treatment, use that. Create a VIP lounge and provide access to few lucky ones.
